A vibrant city in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea
Limassol – the second largest city of Cyprus – is a renowned destination for tourists, well known for its vibrant nightlife, luxurious hotels, cosmopolitan character, the cuisine and of course its beaches. Located in the south coast of Cyprus it extends along the sea and towards the mountains of Troodos. The lifestyle in the city is very laid back, that even the most committed workaholics are tempted to make time and enjoy the almost all year round sunshine with a cup of coffee or a refreshing cocktail.
All across the coastline of the city, you will find luxury hotels, restaurants of local and international cuisine and bars serving drinks until the early morning hours. The seawater is crystal clear and safe for a swim at any time of the day or night. The most recent addition to the coast was the Limassol Marina, a large-scale project with restaurants, shops, spa, fitness and cultural facilities, 74 exclusive villas, 162 luxury apartments and 650 berths for yachts up to 110m. The marina has become the latest biggest attraction of the city and it is busy throughout the day and night. For those who want to enjoy the view of the sea, while doing some exercise, a bicycle lane extends from one side of the city to the other.
Another area that is popular amongst the locals as well as the tourists is the “old town”. There, you are able to see how the modern architecture meets the classic. The area around the Limassol castle is full of restaurants and bars, cultural centres and hipster coffee shops. The city centre also hosts the Cyprus Technological University as well as a number of collages, so throughout the day the young people give a breath of new life to the streets of Limassol. The castle initially erected during the Lusignan dynasty, is built on top of an early Christian basilica and a Byzantine monument, though the structure as it appears today dates from the period of Ottoman rule. According to tradition, it is the place where the wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre took place.
Limassol is situated between the two ancient cities of Amathus and Kourion, sights of particular interest. The ancient Kourion is located on the west side of the city, near the village Episcopi, on the cliffs, right above the popular beach of Kourion. There you can even enjoy a theatrical play or a concert at the ancient Greek amphitheatre, with an uninterrupted view to the sea.
Throughout the year there are numerous events and festivals held in the city, like the wine festival, the beer festival, the famous Limassol carnival parade that attracts people from all around the area, the graffiti festival and many more.
Limassol is definitely a place where people cannot get bored easily. Nowadays the city is developing and expanding really fast and the future of this Mediterranean gem is very promising. For the people who want to combine their business activities with a healthy and interesting lifestyle, it is the perfect place to be.
